This has to be some fancy software. To program that using coordinates would be a folly, it would be quicker to give a guy a lump of metal and a file and leave him to it. CAM has come a long way.

@leehound I think it is a face actually. If you look on face that shows the chin in your CAM the nose is off center. I think this was scanned or made after a human face. Pretty cool. :O I finally figured out how to make the tool path for this face.

@leehound How did you get the 3D data in the first place? I know it can be done vie Vetric's Aspire but it is more bas-relief and 2.5D carving. It looks to me like you may have true 3D axis carving??? Look up Vetric Aspire and check out the tools to manipulate jpegs. Cool stuff!

We use these MAM72's at work. We have 1 MAM72-63V PC2 2 MAM 72-63V 1 MAM 72-3VS They are amazing machines, unfortunatley one of ours is down for repair due to backlash on the A axis. Although our machines run 24 hours a day 6 days a week.

I have a CNC motor controller 3 axis Toshiba TB6560AHQ and 3 BS57HB56-03 Stepper Motors but when I power up the systems after while my motors ?gets hot? without using them (in non operational mode) is that any normal? CNC laths are easy to crash over machine centers fact . you have to remember to much in the 200 y 5 axis in regards the tool carousel , after a yr jobbing one off work had a enough on the 200y not paid enough and not a single crash .

If you read my comment you would see that I did answer your question. 1) I went to college = I paid for education, 2) I am a journeyman machinist = I did an apprenticeship, 3) I worked for major software and machine dealers = I was sent for training therefore I guess some was given to me. @jtjjbannie I attended two separate colleges, but I did mostly manual machining, I am a mechanical technician -toolmaking, journeyman machinist, certified cnc programmer-mastercam, certified cnc installer-mazak. I worked for a mastercam dealer and a mazak dealer as applications/service engineer. At my shop we have integrex 400st, integrex e-420hst, several cybertech turn 4500m, vtc-800 30sr 5 axis mill, and 2 quick turn nexus 450my lathes. We are also buying an integrex e650hs soon.

A little insight since many people have many strange comments. IIRC this is penske racing. No it is not perfectly balanced, it does go for grinding after. It is a full race crankshaft, it is machined from billet rather than cast, more than likely a one off crankshaft.

@Tommiclio , well they take the part and heat it in a furnace with an atmosphere of carbon-monoxide and hydrogen/nitrogen. The high temperature causes carbon to diffuse into the surface of the part. The depth of diffusion is controlled by the temperature and the percentage composition of the atmosphere in which the part is heated. Btw you wouldnt happen to know whether that CNC programming concepts book by Mike Lynch is any good or not ?

@Tommiclio Well carborising is only a surface hardenning process which makes a part resistant to scratches and notches which may lead to fatigue failure (crack initiation, propagation and ultimate failure) of that part. If this crankshaft was made of mild steel (suitable machining material) and then carborised it would still not be suitable for use in automobiles as it will would deform easily during operation unlike tempered steel.

@topfuel707 Since he is milling the chamfer in a soft material, it is OK. It's different when on a conventional lathe and you are using a 45 deg form tool. The tool can roll over the first thread. Nothing wrong with the way he did it.

Yes I agree and also I would climb cut the ID not conventional easer on the tooling and better finish I know it doesn't matter on a thread ID but why not do it anyway, just a good habit, also climb cutting although not in this application because it was roughed with the drill will keep the cutter from cutting more stock than intended

I used to work for Soouthwestern Industries,CA. They make several products: A retrofit kit for converting a manual mill to CNC and the manufacture small knee mills and CNC lathes. I left in 2000 when they were abooout to introduce a modest cost CNC package for about $6K to 8K. Look thenm up on the net. i believe their 2 axis CNC mills cost about $14K and 3 axis machines aboooout $26K or so. i may be off somewhat on their prices but check the net.

Where is your cooling fluid????? When CNC machining you should always use coolant fluid to extent tool life and prevent case harding. But maybe it the type of of mill cutter you are using and the material being machined at a slower feed rate and speed that you can get away with not using it? I still in tech college and we will be covering the CNC Lathe and Mill next quarter. So I've only been learning manual machining so far. Man, there is so much to remember. Thank G for The Machinist Handbook!

Just a bit of fun.. Using BF Hexapod as a pen plotter. DXF files are converted to translation moves and fed to the hexapod in sequence. The idea is to replace the pen with a small routing head, and then try to cut something! Routing resolution is pretty low, but you get the idea.

That high tech precision lathes that can rotate at high speed for long periods of time with huge torque, and if needed can stop and do precision rotations, both situations on the main axle. What kind of motors do they use to do that task? A stepper overheat after some time at high speed, right?

@molinobeer I've made some pretty precise parts in my day, but I could never come close to this speed and repeatability. Parts that would take me hours on the old machines, they do in minutes, and then they automatically feed in more stock and start making another one just like the first. I've got to admit, it's fun to watch them work.

It is a long shot I know but have you considered using the position sensing devices from old ink-jet printers or scanners? As far as I know a lot still use a glass ruler containing gray-code or similar to detect where the print head is. Some industrial measuring equipment uses similar "rulers". HP used to sell upgrade kits to convert machine tool drives tho I suspect that the cost was very high but printers can be had for nothing or almost nothing. Its just a thought, good luck!

yeah you are right but steel can still be machined at the appropriate feeds and speeds. It takes way longer but the biggest problem with this machines is boring and circle cutting because they don't have a lot of torque and you have to increase the speed to do the cuts. I will like to try the x3 to compare it

You are right about that. I think the X2 can be quite useful. Some times I wish I had one of these machines at work (or similar benchtop machine) so that I could machine some prototypes or small parts without having to set up a huge vice (or whatever other setup is required) on the bigger machines. I have spent a lot of time on my X2, and with a caring hand and some skill, it can do some impressive stuff thats not just for the hobby market. Needs a lot of work and care though.

As long as I am assuming things: A highly skilled and experienced machinist would be able to pick a machine that is appropriate for a particular application. Most of us folks buying small machines coming from a limited machining background are unlikely to fully understand the incredible forces involved with machining until they are experienced first hand. For machining relatively soft materials, like aluminum/brass/plastic, these small machines work fine. Steel is a disturbing wake-up call.

I struggled with the decision between an X3 or RF45 of some sort. I didn't intend to CNC the thing, just DRO. The X3 is a nice little mill but limited on travel. I ended up with an Industrial Hobbies RF45. Overall pretty happy with it for the $1500 I paid.

yeah man i also have a x3 and love it- only thing i would do to it is stiffin up the column. i also do a lot of plastic work and im amazed at the cuts i can take with it. If i were to buy again i would def go with the x3 :)

Fair enough :) I own an SX3 manual mill. It's not a terrible machine and it does what I need fairly well, which is primarily milling plastics. I use 9/16" - 3/4" end mills and take 1/4" - 1/2" DOCs. This machine sometimes trembles a bit more than I'd like under some of those cuts in acetyl. I struggled with the decision on which "small" mill to buy. My conclusion having used the machine for production in plastics, and prototyping in metals, is that smaller would be intolerable.

and those civic drag cars can be a lot of fun :D Im just saying no its not a industrial machine but people have rigged them up to do some pretty insane stuff, take pretty insane cuts, ATC's, completely automatic x2's (probing, et cetera). The x1 i will agree with you but with some ingenuity you can have a capable machine with the x2

It's not that you are going to just BUY the car, you are going to buy a car with the intention of doing some intended modification for performance or what have you. This doesn't mean it needs to be an expensive german car, but it does mean that you pick a platform that gives you the most advantageous starting point for the dollar if possible such that the intended modifications generate ideal results. Yes the X2 platform can be CNC'd, yes people make drag cars out of civics.

Your statement is along the same lines as: If your looking to buy a car, but at LEAST a 50k+ car made from germany. otherwise, your wasting your time. DO some searches of "hoss machine" then come back and say cnc'ing the x2 is a waste of time

It doesnt take much skill to convert one of these mills to cnc. There are lots of parts out there for this very purpose, and if you just do some searching on google, you can find a lot of information on the subject. You don't need any kind of mechanical or electrical education, but it does help.
