How to cover parts in carbon fiber (fibre) by skinning or wrapping

In this video we show you how to take an existing part and cover it it real carbon fibre. In the video we use a carbon fibre skinning kit (available from www.carbonmods.co.uk ) which includes all of the materials needed to cover a number of parts in carbon fibre. We call this technique skinning but other name are carbon fibre wrapping, coating and covering.

I don't know if the carbon fibre itself causes as much damage to human tissue as the asbostos fibre. But the requirements for safety equipment are the same for both so i guess you should be careful. Also, epoxy vapor is poisonous and very allergenic (causes allergy and cancer a.o) Good gloves and the right bio breathing filters should always be used in handling epoxy or sanding it. I'm making surfboards out of it and have done thorough research on this.

Important! Sanding carbon fibre require the same safety equipment as handling asbestos! Also, this carbon fibre vid shows how to make it look cool. But to make a part that is strong you have to work differently and really saturate your fibre in epoxy. Prefferably use vacuum bagging and an owen to cure it in.

At least they are using epoxy. Unfortunately he skips an important step to achieve clarity between coats. Between each coat of clear, you must wet sand, 200-400 grit, or 3M scuff pad (red) with soap and water. Otherwise you will get what can be seen around 6:00 into this vid. See the cloudiness? That is trapped in between the coats and will not come out. That's what you get by just sanding and applying directly to the sanded surface.

Hi DaveVU2, There is no real way to soften epoxy far enough to reseal cracks in it, I would recommend trying laminating epoxy brushed on the area, then heat it with a heat gun to lower it's viscosity, in many cases this will allow the resin to capillary into the damage and reseal itself, you can then wipe away the resin from the surface. Hi Dipacalypse, You could use the topcoat on a prepreg part, however you would probably be better having it lacquered/clear coated, using a good quality automotive system. any decent spray-shop should be able to do this for you. Hope this helps, Carbon Mods

i have a question and i hope you can help me out. i have a carbon fiber hood that has suffered cracks in the epoxy. i tried sanding it down but dont want to ruin the cf fabic. my question is.. is there a softer or an affective thinner that can soften the epoxy enough to erase the cracks but will still allow it to cure when im done?

Hi Doomage121, To do a hood you just need the rough sand the surface, as long as it is sanded to a rough finish and is clean and free of greases etc, It should be fine, it doesn't really matter how far you sand through the paint. Hope this Helps Carbon Mods

thank you for the fast reply! i try to use also polyester than specific epoxy resin for infusion! i make at first the degassing of the resin after that i mix the 2 components! but when i make the infusion, after that i get out the piece i smooth the surface for the clearcoat! i see micro cavity un the middle of intersection of fiber! it's very very small but when i get the clearcoat become horrible! my vacuum pump arrived to -0,92bar aprox.. waiting your answer thank you

I think what he meant to say is the rate at which CO2 is being produced (or synthesized during respiration) far exceeds the ability of plants to convert that into O2. If we also take into consideration the fact that based on what I've been told (not checking specific statistics) we are depleting forests and such if we increase the rate of CO2 production and decrease the rate of O2 production(which directly utilizes CO2) that puts us in a predicament because that balance is essential.

Depending on the material you get, or how you paint it you can get a real good effect. For an average case you're looking at .75m2 of surface area, and I think the kit they're selling covers about .3m2 , so you'd need 3 kits, each at £47. Dunno, just a suggestion, dude.

You could just lay on a light carbon fabric, but you would have to be very careful to minimize the amount of resin you use - that is the majority of the mass added and would impact the sound. I would suggest making a mold of the top, and vacum forming the fabric to the inside, this would force out most of the resin, making the layer much thinner and lighter.

No, you can't - it simply looks much "flatter". Real CF has an awesome 3D effect and depth, that even imitations on sticky paper can't replicate. I've compared 3 different kinds (got samples..), and the real deal just looks heck of a lot different.

5 layers would be more than enough unless you're building a mainframe. i don't know about how it would be on mdf but you can build up coats of resin and lightly wet sand them to get rid of any uneven spots or imperfections. it's the same process as wet sanding the clear coat on a car. you want to take out any imperfections but don't get into the surface of the paint or the cf in this case

Hi How strong is one layer of carbon fibre? - i was wondering if the home made could withstand some punishment. I'm going to make my own PC case entirely out of carbon fibre, and need to know if i need 2,5, 10 or 50 layers of CF to make it strong enough. I mean, normally, CF is put in a mould in an oven to cure. How does it compare? Hi, actually, this type of repair works really well. I'd recommend wet-laying the carbon fibre (like we show in the video) and then wrapping the finished repair in heat-shrink tape. You heat up the tape and when it shrinks it will squeeze the excess resin out and leave you with a nice consolodated repair. Our fishing pole repair kit works in just this way.

Wax and PVA is making double sure. Once you know what you're doing it's unlikely you'll carry on putting wax and PVA as the release agent but for your first go it just makes it even less likely that you'll have a dreaded 'sticker'. PVA is bomb-proof but it leaves smears on your finished part which have to be polished out. Wax will leave the part ultra-shiney straight out of the mould but is more prone to problems for beginners (missed bits, mould too 'green' etc.).

Yes, there is actually. We've been working on it for some time because there's lots to cover. The first one will be resin infusion, after that we'll do a standard vacuum bagging. Just cause we love infusion so much, the parts you can make are just so strong and light. After that, we'll make one on standard bagging. Oh, and for both of them we'll have the rubish sound qaulity sorted! Glad you like the vids.

Carbon fiber strength comes from the density of nano carbon structure combined with plastic resin or other cohesive materials. So even if the entire CF sheet goes through the same cooking process, without the proper application of resin, CF is as weak as your washroom carpet.

The real thing would be nicer of course but cost way too much. CF vinyl would be my next choice, no mess, simple to apply and if you mess up just peel off and start again. Spraying would be my last choice. It would need to be done by a pro cos it would be so easy to mess it up then it would just look like crap.

The E7 is going to be released for about 40k estimated, possibly just a bit lower. The standard outfiited police car hits the street for 34k (thats an average that includes Impala, Charger, and Crown Vic) and as far as the lights go, they will have the option to use day/night modes in which red (primary) will be used during the day (with a few blue) and blue (primary) at night (with secondary red). Yea, it looks cool indoors, and @ night, but I've seen this car in the daylight and the lights are way too weak, nowhere bright enough. I hope they improve it before production. 2011 should be an interesting year for police cars: with this, the Ford Taurus turbo, and the Chevy Caprice making a comeback with a 400hp v8. My money's on the Caprice.

It looks nice. I like the reverse open doors on a thicker hinge, and it allows for a better dynamic, but im not sold on that touch screen. Its hard enough to do everything you need to do that way it is, and to have to shift up and forward to touch it may be an issue. That being said I have yet to sit in one so it may be pretty reasonable in reach. I have also read that the redesigned the seats, and seat belts to allow you to have access to your duty weapon when seated and buckled!

Yes afcourse the producer of this carbon cello wants to promote his instruments. I tested these, and : they just don't sound at all ! If you put this cello against a wooden instrument, the difference is huge .... that's why almost nobody uses them.(-: Test it yourself and you will HEAR it.

traditional one (as long as it's a good one)....these cellos are consistently the same and weather doesn't affect them that much......a traditional cello is susceptible to climate changes but has much more tonal variety.

I' ve had this pedal for a year now. its amazing. Its my first delay and only one so far. After studying about digital and vintage delays I never knew how unrealiable, tone sucking and expensive some can be (EH, Boss etc.) But I would never known only having own this one because its one of the best, easy to use and affordable delays out there!!! ANALOG for christ sake!!!
