Okay. But my point was how much money these guys poured into this, not how cheap can you get an HVX. Lets say they already had the computer to run After Effects and Final Cut Pro. The camera, AE and FCP together will run at least $12,000. For a home made lightsaber flick. More power to them but I think very few people who watch RvD2 realize that much money & time went into it when they are judging other people's saber duel films.

Mine was $5600 not including P2 cards - 16GB P2 = $1100 alone.

awe, I wanted to see how the composer went about scoring the scene. That behind the scene vid left a lot to be desired for me.
By: lonearcherfilms. on 24 Feb 08, 11:25:28
Not a chance dude, unless your buying a HVX off the back of a truck that's a grey market piece of crap.
By: SchmokinJoe. on 16 Jan 08, 21:04:33
Yes, $7,000 new but you can find a deal and get a bare-bones one for as low as $1500. But that just furthers what I was trying to get across. All told they spent well over $10,000 on this and it's a shame that most people will think it's just two guys with some home movie equipment and judge other films based on that misconception.

yes, it´s travis boles. he´s friend with Ryan and michael.... they did FX on three in the afternoon and six in the morning too

Actually they use the HVX 200 which costs around $7000.00 not $1500 lol.

NO NOT WILL SMITH!

I meant saber duel films, not other fan films with people in costume (which tend to have a lot more time and production value put into them). Most saber duel films are a couple of kids with a home video camera. It seems like this film is 'just a couple guys' but there is so much more involved and people don't realize that. Very entertaining, yes. But it's unfortunate that this has set the standard that people expect from a homemade saber duel.. because this is NOT 'homemade'.

This is an interesting topic. Outside of the music budget which was done on a low budget festival film pay scale and funded completely by fans of the first RVD, the movie was created in a similar fashion to all other fan films. A few thousand bucks for cameras and lighting is really not a large budget and it takes talent to make this equipment work. If you really believe in something you will make it happen regardless of budget and Ryan and Mike had some serious vision.

The Capitol Records recording session is the only thing, that I can see, that they got AFTER the videos "got famous". They are cool movies but pump a few thousand dollars and some professional input into any fan film and suddenly it starts to look a lot better. It's just unfortunate that most others fan films are shot down and judged on standards they can't possibly meet. "RvD is teh best!" -well.. take a look at how much more they had to work with...
By: SchmokinJoe. on 29 Oct 07, 21:39:41
They have been using After Effects and Final Cut since day one and those two programs are NOT cheap. Combined they will set you back at LEAST $1,600, not to mention the comp needed for them to run smoothly. For RvD 2, Ryan bought a $1,500 HD camera and they had a lighting guy on set helping them set up shots (even if he was a friend and did it for free, most fan films do not have a 'lighting guy').
By: dudemantg. on 27 Oct 07, 18:09:25
actually they made these videos before they had all this good stuff, then the videos got famous and now they get to use this high class stuff and get to work with lucas arts
By: PRPWR. on 25 Oct 07, 22:31:30
isnt that the dude from 3 in the afternoon?
By: SchmokinJoe. on 23 Oct 07, 19:46:05
If anyone wonders why the Ryan vs Dorkman video is so much better than other peoples' saber duels, now you know. Most kids making these films don't get to have lighting guys, orchestras and conductors, or fifteen hundred dollar HD cameras. I mean, the video looks cool, but give me a break. With the kind of production value this thing has, what do you expect??
