One of the things I really enjoy about Carlin is that he knows how to play the mostly-bullshit Hollywood "Game," which is something that even a lot of professionals forget from time to time. Take mentioning his dead wife in the last seconds of the segment - a rather crass thing to do, in my opinion. He handled that with exceptional grace.

Lenny Bruce was criticized for his "vulgar" use of the English language when describing his views. And yet, even today to listen to him, he was right on. George Carlin exemplifies that same thing. (Did a skit in Jr. High drama class one time of WINO radio) I had no idea he went back this far... on stage with Jimmy Durante, unbelievable. And I too think he was twice as funny when he stayed away from the cynical outlook, and his comedy ws lighter. He "sold out" a bit towards the end of his career.

I think that the audience was just random kids / tourist @ NBC/Leno 4 the nite that don't really know the comedic styling of Mr.Carlin. Can't blame George for ditching his optimism. He was reflecting the times after all. He had every reason to be optimistic during that era, and just as many reasons to be angry and cynical by the 80s. I don't agree he ever gave up being playful, he would talk about goofy shit and use word play right to the end, it was just overshadowed by his increasingly aggressive jibes at society.
